Bodegón El Piojo is a peculiar and somewhat different establishment serving Canarian cuisine in La Matanza de Acentejo, which has been open since 1957.
Located in an old Canarian mansion, this space combines traditional Canarian cuisine with art.
It has several rooms, some with exposed stone walls and wooden ceilings, in a simple, rustic guachinche atmosphere. It also has a patio or outdoor terrace at the back of the house, which can be used on days with good weather.
There is no private parking, and although there are streets nearby where you can park, finding a spot nearby can sometimes be a bit difficult.
Their menu isn’t extensive, but it is varied and representative of Canarian cuisine. You can find starters and sharing dishes such as dressed tomatoes, ropa vieja, fish churros, croquettes, yellow rice, peas, fried eggs, fiesta meat… and their specialty, fried rabbit, or even in salmorejo.
Occasionally they make a dessert or offer fruit, but it’s not an establishment that usually offers something sweet to end the meal.
They have house red wine served in bulk, from independent winegrowers in the area.
Both the prices and the amount of food served in their portions are adequate, correct.
The place isn’t very big, so the service is usually friendly and attentive, at a more relaxed pace, as if you were at home.
If you’re looking for a spot with a Canarian essence and a unique touch, where art is encouraged, Bodegón El Piojo is a place to visit. And if you’re a fan of traditional fried rabbit, you’ll find just what you’re looking for here.
